I don't like to toot my own horn, but I have a pretty awesome memory. [Toot, toot!] I'm very thankful for that as I try to capture life's little moments with my mind's eye. However! I will be cliche and say that my mind and memory has mushy moments nowadays that I'm a mom - seriously, why do hormones wreak such havoc?!
Which leads to me to the point that I am very grateful to catch some of my favorite moments on film.
...Assimilating from Japan to South Texas to the Northwest (and wherever else Navy life takes us).

We Have Lift Off
Sometimes its like a little switch that goes off in Landon: One moment he is taking a wobbly step or two and then randomly he's walking across the living room. With help from his favorite dinosaur, of course.
[Disregard the mats and random objects and toys in the background. Children are the Lord's way of saying your house was too clean anyways.]

House Hunt 2011
Erik has successfully finished "Phase I" of his time here in Kingsville and is staying the course for "Phase II" - another milestone complete in the adventure to return to Whidbey Island, WA. He is doing ridiculously well, so keep up the good work, my love! Landon is so proud that he peed himself. Multiple times, even. Already. Today.
We are looking forward to buying a home later this year. After being perpetual renters, we definitely have a strong sense of what does and does not work for us. White glass cooktop stoves? Does not work for us. Plush green lawn? Works for us. Improper seals on doors that allow scorpions in house? Does not work for us. Properly functioning plumbing? Works for us. You get the drift. Plus my extreme hours logged watching home and reno shows on HGTV and DIY networks over the years surely will also be an asset in understanding what we can and cannot change. I knew it wouldn't all be for nothing!
I would really love a craftsman-style home someday
and WA is a prime area for that. I'm becoming intrigued more and more by mid-century styles, though, too. I find the latter offers nice clean lines on the outside and some really unique layouts on the interior that you just don't find with newer homes. They always have something weird and neat, like a blender base built into the countertop or a nook for a telephone.
I can talkity talk talk about that stuff for ages, but at the end of the day, we have to live somewhere. And when the time comes, if that means a house built in the 90's with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, a laundry room and open layout that fits the bill, then design preferences will have to be put aside for the time being. We are young(ish), it'll be our first home and we may have to sell it in 5 or 6 years, so there will have to be a little mind over heart in the decision.
I'm still so outrageously excited, though! Yippee!!!

Mouse Hunt 2011
There is a mouse in the house. There may even be a couple. He's a tiny field mouse; in fact he is probably smaller than the tarantulas in our yard. Why the tarantulas in our yard have not yet eaten the mice is beyond me - it would be nice if the circle of life kind of solved this problem for us (and the snake would then eat the tarantula, of course).
I run a pretty tight ship when it comes to food storage, so I suppose it is successfully feeding on Landon's crumbs these days; he is becoming more insistent on feeding himself and it is a splatterfest three times a day.
First time the mousey mouse was too quick and got away despite my pursuit to eradicate him from the pantry at an ungodly 4am hour. My bait boxes haven't been working, either. So tonight I am stepping it up a notch with some new traps and some peanut butter. I had to ponder whether they would prefer creamy or crunchy and I went with crunchy because it's the best. Yumm-o!
"Get out of my house, mouse. I can't sleep soundly until you do. Thank you! All my love (but not really), your friend Kate."

Getting Ready for Football Season
It's a little early, but we had a some Fall football excitement in the air today as we put on Landon's Redskins onesie, courtesy of Fruncle Matt. I have a feeling this will be a staple in his wardrobe over the next few months.
